The Defiant One, Pt. 6
The fact that Sheppard doesn't actually want to be separated from McKay, doesn't actually want there to be distance between them, is underlined by the fact that as soon as he reaches the jumper, he contacts McKay on the radio. It's literally the first thing he does. He both wants and needs McKay's company, even though his priority is keeping the man safe (and hence, away from him and what he thinks is his deleterious influence).
They have the following exchange over radio:
Sheppard: McKay. McKay: Still here. Sheppard: The son of a bitch beat me to it. He's fast. McKay: I think you should get back here. Sheppard: Negative.
This conversation has no point. Sheppard informs McKay of a situation he can do nothing about. McKay reiterates that he wishes for him to return, to no avail.
Sheppard is attempting to reconnect but he's terrible at expressing, what you'd call it, feelings. Sharing what he's doing, what's going on with him here, is him trying real hard to show McKay that he's important to him. To make amends. To tell him that he didn't actually mean to yell at him back there.
As relieved as McKay is to be hearing from him, his terse reply betrays that he is both upset and worried for the other man. Much more important than his hurt feelings is that he, too, just wants Sheppard to be safe. To keep him safe he's trying to use the most powerful weapon in his arsenal: logic. Only, logic isn't going to work because the motivation for what Sheppard did and is doing was irrational from the get-go.
I noted before that Sheppard rarely uses military parlance with McKay but then started acting extra military toward Dr. Gaul to put him in his place. Here, while Sheppard was the one that needed to contact McKay (because he wanted to have him near, hear that he's alright, know that he's fine, just called to say hello), he suddenly gets all military with "Negative."
It's not because he's suddenly on mission mode. It's not that he's trying to show the civilian his place. It's not even to maintain that all-important distance between them. It's to remind himself that he can't go back even though he really wants to. He's not saying "No, I won't". He's not saying "No, I can't." He's not saying "I'm not going to." He's not even saying "No."
The only thing he can say in this situation is "Negative" because every bone in his body wants to do exactly that without Rodney even having to tell him.
And it's fortunate for Sheppard that McKay was attempting to logic him because that's what he himself knows best -- knows that it would work on him the best. Because if McKay had done what Brendan did and begged Sheppard to stay with him. If he had pleaded. If McKay had simply asked, Sheppard would not have been able to leave. Like earlier, when he didn't even have to say the words out loud for Sheppard to do what he asked:
But instead, McKay continues trying to use reason to sway him:
McKay: There's no point in you being out there, this-- Sheppard: He's aboard my ship. McKay: What are you, Captain Kirk?! What good's it gonna do him?
This is the second reference to Star Trek in rather short order. So. Let's talk about Star Trek for a bit.
In Poisoning the Well (S01E07), it was Sheppard that called Dr. Beckett McCoy, "the TV character [he] plays in the real world". Note that he makes a reference to TOS, the television series, and not to the films through which the majority of the general audience probably know him. Sheppard makes the reference unprompted, associating Beckett's fear of the dematerialization through the wormhole with Bones' fear of transporters. McKay catches the reference immediately, yes, but he's not the one that brings it up. While we saw him watching "a strange episode of The Outer Limits" in Home (S01E08), watching cheesy science fiction seems much more up Sheppard's alley than McKay's.
And, given how we see McKay reference Star Trek here (and in the future, very notably a few episodes hence, in reference to Kirk "romancing the alien priestess"), McKay's knowledge of the franchise seems a lot more cursory than Sheppard's. He displays a more superficial understanding of the character of Kirk. Yes, Captain James Tiberius Kirk was an All-American Action Hero, brash and impulsive, headstrong and braggadocious. He had a beautiful girl on every planet and loved his space ship more than anything else. Admired by women, envied by men. This is the image of Kirk that McKay seems to have.
With John Sheppard, there is noticeable deconstruction of the hero-myth going on. He is a hero, but certainly not the kind of hero that we had in 1967.
We'll get to the other aspects of Kirk later but here, upset, McKay seems to indicate that Sheppard cares more about the space ship, an immaterial thing, than he does about people -- feeling abandoned, he feels that he is less important to Sheppard than the ship is. In this, he is to McKay like Captain Kirk. His caring for the Enterprise was one of his most notable characteristics, after all.
Only, as much as he loved his ship, Kirk destroyed it to save one man.
One of the most painful scenes in all of Star Trek happens at the end of the second movie, The Wrath of Khan. Kirk has to watch Spock die right before his eyes, helpless to do anything to stop it. How ever you interpret their connection, there is clearly love between them.
To comfort Kirk, Spock tells him that in the grand scheme of things his life is not worth more than anyone else's and if he can use it to spare many others, it's his choice to make. He's just one man, Jim. It will hurt, but you'll survive. It's the logical thing to do.
Only, Kirk doesn't see it that way. The entire third movie, The Search for Spock is Kirk willing to sacrifice everything and everyone for this one man, to get him back. That one life was worth more to him than all other lives combined. Even his ship, as one of the sacrifices he has to make is to allow the Enterprise to be blown up. And Jim, well. He did love that ship.
This is shown especially in the series to the point of lampooning. So yes, calling someone that excessively cares about their ship Kirk would make a kind of sense. But that's not what Sheppard does. He likes the jumpers fine. He likes flying things and they are advanced space craft, what's not to like? But they're not, never have been, and never will be more important to him than people. In fact, just a few episodes ago he was willing to sacrifice a jumper just to forge some kind of a deal with the Genii.
At the end of the third movie, Kirk comes to as close to a confession of love as one can without saying the actual words. He tells Spock "Because the needs of the one... outweigh the needs of the many," a reversal of his dying words. To James T. Kirk, Spock was worth all the other lives combined and then some.
So, Sheppard compared Beckett to Bones a few episodes ago. Now McKay implies that Sheppard is acting like Kirk. And yes, Sheppard and Kirk certainly have some things in common. But it's not the things that McKay thinks.
I mentioned the homoerotic nature of Kirk and Spock's relationship previously. While it may not have been the original intention of the creators, they certainly acknowledged the existence of this undercurrent between the characters. They even created a special kind of love, a word for a type of love felt by the Vulcans that was somewhere between friendship and erotic love. In the novelization of the first movie, their relationship is described as follows: "Theirs had been the touching of two minds which the old poet's of Spock's home planet had proclaimed as superior even to the wild physical love which affected Vulcans every seventh year during pon farr."
What ever his sexuality was, how ever many alien priestesses he may have romanced, Spock was the closest person to Kirk. It was Spock that he loved the most, no others could compare. Not the mother of his son, not even his son. Kirk and McCoy, the ship's doctor, were very good friends. Their interaction showed us what close male friendship could look like. And Kirk and Spock's relationship was always something different. It was something more. Deeper.
They were in love. However you interpret the nature of this love (or whether it was ever physically consummated; but let's note that the touch-telepathic Vulcans may have had very different ideas to humans as to how such things were consummated), they were lovers. And this is more obvious watching the show. I cannot imagine that any young bisexual boy watching TOS would fail to notice the undercurrent. Would fail to notice the love between the two characters. And might even have been inspired to, say, join the air force to find something like that.
As mentioned, McKay was attempting to logic Sheppard during their exchange. Sheppard called Beckett McCoy, McKay called Sheppard Kirk. By method of elimination that would make McKay himself Spock. And they do have much in common.
Intelligent, logical and socially awkward science officer repressing his feelings, feeling shame for them. Willing to do anything for the dashing starship captain that he doesn't realize, can't even understand cares for him more than life itself.
Yes, Sheppard does have many things in common with Captain Kirk. Caring about his ship is certainly one of those things. But like for Kirk, the ship would never hold the tiniest candle to how much he cares about the man he wants to keep by his side at all times, at all costs. The one he can't lose. The one he can't live without.
"Of my friend I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... ...human."

OFMD Meta Series Master Thread
My brain works in meta series for some reason, and a couple of my individual metas have been really popular! So in case you're looking for more of my stuff, or to read a meta related to one you already liked, here're my series. I'll update them as I go.
Metas about Stories and Storytelling in OFMD
Do we just keep telling the same story forever? Meta on OFMD S1E7 "This is Happening"
(Note: writing this while on a holiday, there'll be more metas in this series once I get home and go through drafts ;) )
The Fuckery's the Thing: Finding truth through lies in "The Art of Fuckery"
True Stories, False Stories: "The Best Revenge is Dressing Well"
Stories within Stories (within more stories!): OFMD Meta Analysis of Ep 1 E4
Stede Bonnet's Stories (S2)
Ed Teach's Stories
Stede Bonnet's Stories (S1)
Storytelling in Our Flag Means Death
Character Analysis Question Metas
Why was finding Stede's letter so important for Ed?
Why did Ed think becoming a fisherman made any sense at all?
Why did Ed throw away his leathers?
Why did Ed want to "take it slow"?
Why didn't Izzy shoot Ed (then)?
Why did Ed headbutt Stede?
Why didn't Ed always protect Stede?
How did Stede leave pirating so easily?
Did Ed really want to die?
How did Stede know that Ed wanted to "watch the world burn"?
Why did Ed shoot Izzy then?

Titan Maximum #8: "Mercury Falling" | November 15, 2009 - 11:30PM | S01E08
Gibbs has some kinda bomb or some shit that’s going to blow up Mercury. For reasons. Listen, this show sucks wad and I don’t like respecting it by doing a real thing here. Usually the spirit of this project calls for me to watch the episode without (much) distraction. This episode I made a very intentional choice to half-watch it, while continuing with my mind-numbing long term project to organize and back up my vast digital archives. In certain cases this involves me cutting up long video files that were designed as compilations, effectively decompiling them. This isn’t pornography. Please don’t ask me if this is pornography. It isn’t! These are legitimate business movies.
But I did manage to write down three jokes from this: one is a riff where two characters sarcastically say all the things they are going to do now that the law no longer applies to them, and one of the things was “pee in a bottle and mail it to a bear. This joke gave me pause, because I was like, wait, is that actually funny? I don’t know, man. It felt like something I would’ve written when I was in high school AND been proud of. I didn’t laugh at it, but I did do that Leonardo Dicaprio meme and point at it.
A second joke has the Billy Dee Williams character drinking champagne, and saying “2010, what a great year” and then winking at the camera. Not for you, dickhead. 2010 brought you nothing but getting melted down to make Gromit's turds. The last joke was the main guy saying “Plan B: run like a bitch!” Jesus Christ, this show sucks. It is simply poisonous.

Whumpiest Whump list
So, I was bored at work I love my followers and thus decided to make this awesome list of TV episodes that show an exceptional amount of whump. Also, I sorted it into categories (You know i love lists and categories, right?)
Now these are the whumpiest whump episodes I could think of. You can just pick any episode and and your whump cravings shall be satisfied. But please feel free to let me know of any more whumpiest episodes and I will add them to the list. I am sure there are a lot more.
Also, at the end I put some shows that have an overall good amount of whump.
I may have overestimated how many whump heavy episodes there actually are, because this list got very, very long. That's why I put it under the cut. Be warned. It really is a long list

Underground, Pt. 1
Introduction to the Genii. Lots of lovely interaction in this episode, as Genii-episodes are often real McSheppy.
In Underground (S01E08), we return to the theme of food, hunger, and Sheppard observing McKay like a hungry hungry hippo hawk. The expedition is running out of food, which is why they have to start meeting new people. It begins at a team-meeting where Sheppard has, in fact, started leaning on his hands so that he can keep doing the same thing he has apparently been doing for a good while here once the episode starts: watching McKay.
He can't look away. He is not even blinking. Oh, he tries to. He just can't. He is gazing at McKay through this entire meeting.
Eleven is an interesting number in this context. If someone wanted to make a comical exaggeration, ten cups or a dozen cups would make sense. Eleven is oddly specific which means that it's the result of actually counting the cups he's been drinking, it's the result of observation. Also, while he chastises Rodney, it doesn't sound so much annoyed as it does tender. The kind of 'Oh, you' that's born out of familiarity and fondness. Like he's fascinated by his observation that the other man is drinking a lot of coffee and not like he's drinking them all to ruin. The way Sheppard looks at him is contrasted by Teyla, who looks at McKay eating as though she's put off, even disgusted. That's sure not what Sheppard was doing. We can also contrast it with Ford, who is completely neutral. Also not Sheppard.
When Sheppard says "I guess it's always good to get to know your neighbours" in this weird sing-song cadence, he looks at McKay while he's doing it. He takes one quick glance at Weir, the leader of the expedition and chair of this meeting, but otherwise he is entirely focused on the man stuffing his mouth on the mirror opposite side of the table from him.
Have you been getting to know your new neighbour, Major? This man has absolutely no chill.
Once they reach the Genii homeworld, they come across what they think is a farmer and her beautiful daughter. The farmer is quick to point out that his daughter is betrothed, as though suspecting Sheppard might have designs for her. But the thing is, he actually expressed no interest in this woman what so ever. He doesn't even (jump to) introduce himself which is something we see characters do time and again when we're meant to believe they are interested in a hot specimen of the opposite sex variety. He's not even looking at her, really only makes eye contact with the father and briefly at that. Again, contrasted with Teyla who is beaming at the daughter, Sheppard is extremely nonchalant. If anything, he seems confused that the father would even think that. He even explicitly says that he's not interested:
Tyrus: My daughter, Sora. Sheppard: You must be very proud. Tyrus: She's betrothed. Sheppard: I wasn't hitting on your daughter. I just thought...
You'd be polite? Try to make a good first impression? Compliment you, my dude, by way of the fruit of your loins, the exceptionally good-looking Farmer Joe that you are?
Where Ford side-eyes the farmer as they part ways with him, Sheppard leaves him with a smile and a nod. Clearly, he's on what he later calls his "best behaviour".
But the father wasn't the only one worried about Sheppard's disposition toward the young beauty. When Sheppard turns to Teyla to comment that "They look friendly enough" in a completely neutral way, he gets this worried, searching look from McKay:
Beautiful young woman. Blonde. McKay has zero interest because none of the other guys show interest. He makes sure that Sheppard has no interest, here. Satisfied that this is not the case, McKay himself then proceeds to have no interest. Contrast all of this with the introduction of Perna in the previous episode, Poisoning the Well (S01E06). My guy has so little interest in women he needs other guys to point out when someone is hot.
As they part, we get another private moment between Sheppard and McKay. The fact that as soon as they depart, McKay seeks Sheppard out to make this conspiratorial remark shows us that they are in the process of creating their own little world together. This is also one of the first examples of what McKay will later call "the kidding," which is to say, Sheppard saying counterfactual things just to wind him up.
McKay: Maybe we should offer a sense of humour in trade. Sheppard: Sure. They can have yours. McKay: Oh, please, my side. You slay me. Sheppard: I'm thinking about it.
Again, he uses this sing-song voice to say it. Obviously, he's not literally thinking about slaying McKay. He sure does seem to love teasing the guy, though. I mean, later on (in Sateda, S03E04) he confesses he sometimes takes actual time to think up of ways to tease him about something. Of course, we could alternatively interpret Sheppard as saying that he's thinking about McKay's side here (that is, he often says things that he means literally and people merely interpret in their own way due to this tone of voice) but really he seems to be thinking about the entire package, pretty much all of the time.
But what's curious is that Sheppard actually kind of complimented McKay here, in a back-handed way. He's saying that unlike these people, the man does have a sense of humour, and that his sense of humour is something they could trade with. McKay is quick to interpret it as an insult but for a jibe, it's really weird. "Hey my man, you're much better company than these people." And the episode does go out of its way to show us that Sheppard really does enjoy his company.
The feeling is mutual since, as soon as he's faced with the choice of attending a harvest ceremony (where, one presumes, one might find a plethora of rosy-cheeked maidens) or following the Major, he opts to go back (alone) with Sheppard. Also notable is that while Sheppard orders Ford to stay behind, McKay gets to make his own decision about what to do and where to go.
As this is getting rather long, continued in Part 1.

Only Murders in the Building S01E08
Last week OMITB graced our screens with a virtually dialogue-free episode (for which I will anticipate some awards). The episode was no less than exceptional, but with a somewhat lackluster ending. I mean, who kidnaps people these days anymore, and in fricking New York City?
Following last week's stellar directing, sound editing and script writing, this week's episode, titled "Fan Fiction", serves as the 8th episode of the season and starts with a group of true crime podcast fans waiting in front of the Arconia building.
So why the ending last week if the rest was just so spectacular? As one of those fans puts it, "Why are you being so negative? [..] trust the team". So I'll do just that and keep watching with an open mind (and heart) and see where this is going (I mean, the show was renewed for a second season, so my guess is we are heading towards a mind-boggling cliffhanger, but hey, it's not over till the fat lady sings).
After the theme song plays the story resumes in Theo's van where Mabel and Oliver are currently held captive. Then, they meet up with Teddy and ride in his limo.
1. How long were they in the van? It's already sunlight when they met Teddy;
2. Was tying them up necessary? Mabel even had a blindfold on, I mean, you just untied them when switching cars. This is just lazy writing.
Nathan Lane as Teddy delivers some very good acting, in a grave tone, which we are not used to seeing him do, and so proves just how good of an actor he actually is. We already knew that, but, his versatility still amazes me.
So, Teddy blackmails Oliver and Mabel in producing a final episode of their podcast affirming Tim Kono killed himself due to loneliness or else he knows where they live (really good pun, good delivery!).
Oliver and Mable meet with Charles, who together with Jan, went through Tim's phone and discovered that Tim saw Theo pushing Zoe off the roof. A bit of wasted time, if you ask me, as the audience already knew this piece of information from the secondary narrative plain from last week.
Following setting up a rendezvous with detective Williams, at her request and to aid her in the official investigation, the team prepares a podcast episode releasing evidence found in Tim Kono's phone ("the who, the how, the why and the why now").
I feel obliged to pause here and to mention that Selena delivers her lines most of the time in a better-than-expected way, while mastering the art of sarcasm and low-key funny. Not to mention, that not even half-way through the episode, we got to see bagels and home-made pizza rolls, two quintessential NYC items, and someone was hungry while writing this.
Carrying on, Oliver invites the true crime podcast fans waiting outside to his apartment where everybody was working on putting the pieces together in solving the mystery and producing the next episode of the podcast. Amy Ryan's Jan gets funnier as the show progresses, in a subtle way (kudos to the writing team), playing the unknowing but very-sure-of-herself female character and love interest, by being "reverse-helpful" (Oliver's words, not mine).
Oliver starts directing a reenactment of what happened on the night of Tim Kono's death using the three fans as Tim, Theo and Lester the doorman.
Shall I mention that up until now, the highlight of this episode was fan#3's attempt at portraying Theo by covering his ears with his hands, at which point Oliver, righteously so, said "never do that again"? I knew I shouldn't have laughed, but my, I do enjoy some subtle comedy in a passive-aggressive voice. The writers have managed somehow to bring some old stereotypes in current media and politely telling society this is not how to do it. Congrats!
Jan tried convincing the team to look into other suspects, not aware of past effort. "Please, exit!" said Oliver and Jan left the apartment. Approaching her flat door, she discovers a note on it with a message saying "I'm watching you". Queue mystery music playing.
The following morning the trio releases the final episode of the podcast, incriminating the Dimases, with police showing at their door: grave-robbery and the murder of Tim Kono.
As the team celebrates the podcast release, Charles texts Jan, but without receiving an immediate reply.
[WARINING! SPOILERS AHEAD!]
But, do not wind down, we have two more episodes to go, so of course, right before the end we get hit with a plot twist. The tox report came back and detective Williams noticed Tim Kono was actually poisoned, which means he was already dead when he was shot. Shocking, am I right?
And it's not over yet, there is photographic evidence the Dimases were outside the building even before the fire alarm went off the night Tim Kono was murdered.
Upon hearing the news, Charles storms off saying that his girlfriend was right for suggesting earlier pursuing other suspects and goes to apologize to her with a flower bouquet for dismissing her views. He finds Jan's apartment door open and he enters. Charles finds Jan laying on the floor, facing down, bleeding from a gun-inflicted wound.
Plot Rating: 7.5/10
Acting Rating: 7/10
Cinematography Rating: 5/10
Writing Rating: 6/10
Ending Rating: 6/10
Overall Episode Rating: 6/10

Superjail #9: “Dream Machine” | November 23, 2008 - 11:45PM | S01E08
Everyone say hello to Superjail! This episode is a fun one, and I consider it “nice” as well. In this one, the Warden starts having a very scary nightmare that the inmates are going to overthrow the prison. So, he decides to attach his Wonderful Wubulous dream machine to all the inmates' heads in order to monitor their psyches. The Warden goes crazier and crazier, in part due to the mischievous twins being bad with it. The episode more-or-less devolves into a big old wacky dream-world battle, with dreams within-dreams, animation style changes (at least one, anyway!) and a fun ending that I couldn’t believe I forgot all about.
The Warden’s suspicions extend to his staff, featuring a memorable moment where he looks at Jailbot’s dreams, who just wishes he were human and that the Warden was his dad. Right? That’s what happens, I think. I didn’t take very good notes for this episode and then I forgot I didn’t actually finish this write-up, so I’m going off the dome for this, one day later. Anyway, Jailbot’s dream is in CGI. Jarred dreams he’s a big guy and that the Warden is little. …A little GAY that is! THE TWO DUDES KISS! Cool!! Alice’s dreams that the Warden is a bug and says “quit bugging me”. Alice's lines are a part of the show that I routinely forget to talk about as being good. Allow that last sentence to get me off the hook about that for a while.
The Dream Machine is based on The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T and the Women, a film I remember watching during the pandemic. It was a time when I literally would watch 2-4 movies in a single day, and I remember very little from it other than the iconic costumes and sets that I actually remember from before I saw the movie, when I'd randomly come across stills for the movie and think "that movie looks great. I should watch it", so it’s almost like I never watched it.
There’s probably a second-or-third-hand Luis Buñuel reference I could have jammed in here somewhere. Did you know that every time a person has a dream that is revealed to be inside of another dream it’s a reference to The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie? Probably not really, but every time it happens in a movie, somebody on IMDB will edit the trivia section (under “connections”) saying it’s an intentional reference to this. At this moment, nobody has done this for the Superjail episode “Dream Machine”. Please don't!
This is a fun one, but I regretted not doing druuuuuuuuugs for it. I should have eaten one of those dollar bills covered in fentanyl that cops love so much. I wish I drank a big thing of poison for this episode. It would’ve been so badass.

Have you read any of the Space Ghost comics released from 1997 to 2001? I found them to be pretty good, especially the one where Space Ghost and Brak get invited to an awards show.
I haven't, but I MIGHT! I think I have a couple. Every single comic book ever made is easily findable online, so maybe I'll give those a look soon, and MAYBE I will refer to them in some context during my next SPACE GHOST WEEK.
It is probably nice of me to remind everyone that when this calendar year of Adult Swim reviews is over, I will be tackling the 1999 episodes of Space Ghost, then when I finish 2009 I'll probably do the GameTap episodes. Haven't figured out what I'll do after that, but maybe it'll be nice?
